The TT Universe
CUTT is not set in a fantasy version of our own universe, despite the similarity of the landmasses. It exists in an entirely separate place, where even the metaphysics of reality is slightly different to our world.
The inhabitants of the TT universe are not at a very high level of technology and scientific research, and although they have many useful magical abilities the theory behind them is still frequently revised. The diagram above shows an in-character understanding of "The Universe" of the type which informs discussion of things being 'above' or 'below' other things and so on - please bear in mind that the extent to which it is metaphoric is untested. Looking up into the sky from the Prime lets you see the sky, with the sun and stars as in our universe, and not the underside of a god plane, for example. However, by using ritual magic it is possible to travel between the planes through portals - short lived wormholes, effectively - and the theory used to guide the placement of these does not contradict this current planar model.
The Prime
"The World" of TT is the central plane, known as "The Prime". Native inhabitants of the Prime are generally known as 'mortals', although this should not be taken to imply that beings from elsewhere cannot be killed. The exact shape, size and constitution of the Prime are unknown to the people of Grantabrugge - the edges of the area it is practical to explore have been found, and given the proximity of the Brotherhood of Magic, it is now far more convenient to reach nearby demon planes than to struggle attempting to cross the desert or the wilds beyond Teutonia.
The Demon Planes
Below the Prime lie hundreds - perhaps thousands - of smaller "pocket planes", inhabited by demons of various races. "Demon" is not the opposite of "Angel" in CUTT, the word merely implies sentient life from outside (below) the Prime. The larger demon planes are found higher up, and may be as big as a country - although the size of several large fields is more the norm. If you travel to demon plane and approach the edge, an edge is visible, although it is not really possible to see far beyond it or 'fall off'. Arcadia
Arcadia is the home of the Fae. It is rumoured to be attached variously to the Prime, the godplane of Luca, and to 'the Dreaming', a place that people visit in their sleep. Some or all of these may be true at any given moment. Opinion is divided as to what the Fae are - were Arcadia below the Prime it would be easy to class them as demons, but their power and unusual placement sets them mysteriously apart from other beings.
The God Planes
In the CUTT universe, all mortals have a soul, made of "spirit". They may also have some other spirit animating their body, and when priests call on the authority of their god to cast miracles, the miracle uses spirit. Gods in TT are the sentience of vast pools of this "spirit" energy. This means that when a soul goes to a god on death, it literally becomes a part of the god. On the rare occasions in which gods need to speak with mortals, they will send either an Angel - effectively the soul of a dead priest which has not yet been fully subsumed - or exceptionally, generate an avatar of themselves from pure spirit taken from their pool. This form of life makes TT gods vulnerable to merging with each other, to schisms in which their pool is divided to generate new gods and to alteration by absorbtion of especially dominant influences - a situation of which they all are fully aware. It is possible to travel to a god plane although the ritual may require the soul of a priest, and it would be considered extremely unwise - not to mention impolite - to attempt to do so before death without being specifically invited.
The Elemental Planes
In the TT universe there are six colours of magic, fractionated off from pure grey in an elemental spectrum. The elemental planes are pools of elemental magic of each colour, each of which contains sentient life in the form of its own 'elementals' - beings of pure magic. The largest and most powerful elemental of each colour is known as an Elemental Lord or Lady - gender being largely a matter of convention, as this is not relevant to the elemental form of life. Whereas gods actively award power, the elemental lords merely do not prevent mages from drawing on it - mages may also summon smaller elementals to the Prime and bargain with them for favours such as permission to bind them into a magical item for a short time. Whilst ritual travel to the elemental planes is entirely straightforward, every elemental plane is extremely hostile to mortal life without specific spells of protection - the exact form of danger being related to the element in which the traveller is about to be submersed.Advanced mages and scholars of Planar Theory may spend hours discussing the exact arrangement of the six elemental planes to each other - are they a cube with opposed elements facing, or a giant wheel? Another debated topic is the existence of paraelemental planes where two or more elements mix - for example, the plane of ice where green (water) meets black (cold and darkness). However, there appear to be no paraelementals to summon and magic continues to work in everyday life no matter whose academic paper is best reviewed at present.
